Recovery Scam Protection
The second wave is aimed at people who were already targeted
Victim lists are traded. Once you have lost money, you become a target for people offering to get it back. These are the patterns to watch for.
We never ask for credentials. We will never ask for your passwords, PINs, one-time codes, seed phrases, private keys, full card numbers or remote access to your devices. Anyone who does is not acting on our behalf. Read our Anti-Impersonation Policy.
Warning signs
- A guarantee that your funds will be recovered, or a promised percentage and timeframe
- An upfront fee, retainer, 'gas fee', 'tax', 'unlock fee' or deposit before anything happens
- A request for your passwords, PINs, one-time codes, seed phrase or private keys
- A request to install remote-access software so they can 'check your account'
- A claim to be from a government agency, police force, court or regulator that arrives by direct message
- Pressure, deadlines, and hostility when you ask reasonable questions
- Payment demanded in cryptocurrency, gift cards or through a personal account
- A screenshot of your 'recovered balance' on a platform only they control
- Contact that came from a comment on a scam-related post, video or forum thread
- Refusal to put anything in writing, or documents full of errors and mismatched names
How to verify anyone who contacts you
- 1Stop responding and take the time you need. Legitimate processes survive a pause.
- 2Look up the organization independently and call the number published on its own official site.
- 3Check the official register or warning list for the relevant financial regulator in your country.
- 4Ask for a legal entity name, registration number and registered address, then verify them yourself.
- 5Never verify identity using a link, phone number or document supplied by the person contacting you.
- 6Report the approach to the official fraud reporting body for your country.
