How to report cryptocurrency fraud

What information investigators and exchanges need, and how to assemble it accurately.

Understand what can and cannot be reversed

A confirmed blockchain transaction cannot be reversed by the sender. What can sometimes help is speed: if funds reach a regulated exchange, that exchange may be able to act on a properly evidenced law-enforcement request.

No private service can guarantee recovery of cryptocurrency. Treat any such promise as a warning sign.

Assemble the transaction record

  • Every transaction hash, in order, with dates and times
  • Sending and receiving addresses, and the network used for each
  • Withdrawal confirmations from the exchange or wallet you sent from
  • The platform, app or person that instructed each transfer

Report to the exchange and to authorities

  • Report to the exchange you sent from, using its official support channel
  • File a report with your national cybercrime body and keep the reference number
  • If a receiving address is publicly attributed to a service, report to that service too

Protect what is left

Create a new wallet offline, move remaining assets, and revoke token approvals granted to unknown applications. Never share a recovery phrase with anyone, including anyone offering help.
